MTN Ghana and Telecel Group are preparing to bid for 5G licences following the Ghana government’s decision to revoke the exclusive 5G concession previously granted to Next Gen Infraco (NGIC). The move comes after NGIC fell behind its rollout targets, operating only 49 sites by March compared with the government’s goal of 1,200 sites by 2027.

The upcoming auction, expected to begin within weeks, forms part of Ghana’s strategy to expand 5G coverage to 70% of the population by March 2027 through a combination of wholesale and operator-led networks. Sam George has previously indicated the government’s intention to open the market to greater competition and accelerate nationwide 5G deployment.

Speaking on the planned auction, Moh Damush urged the government to adopt a competitive bidding process that promotes fair market participation rather than favouring the highest bidder. Both Telecel and Stephen Blewett confirmed their readiness to participate in the auction as Ghana enters a new phase in the rollout of next-generation mobile connectivity.

EthSwitch is exploring expanded collaboration with Huawei to strengthen Ethiopia’s digital payments ecosystem through artificial intelligence, resilient payment infrastructure, and cross-border payment connectivity with China. The discussions took place in Addis Ababa during a meeting between EthSwitch CEO Yilebes Addis and Fernando Liu, focusing on mobile banking innovation, AI-driven security, payment infrastructure, and technical capacity building.

The talks come as EthSwitch continues to record strong growth, having processed 387 million interoperable transactions worth ETB 1.26 trillion during the 2025/26 fiscal year while posting ETB 2.6 billion in pre-tax profit. As the backbone of Ethiopia’s electronic payments ecosystem, the national switch supports ATM, point-of-sale, QR code, instant payment, and gateway services that connect banks and payment service providers across the country.

A key area of discussion was cross-border payment cooperation with China’s payment and clearing ecosystem, which could improve payment flows for trade, tourism, and commercial activities between Ethiopia and China. The partnership also aims to strengthen local technical expertise through skills development and knowledge transfer, reflecting Ethiopia’s broader strategy of modernising its financial sector and expanding digital financial inclusion through global technology partnerships.

The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry and MTN Ghana have initiated discussions on a potential partnership to strengthen Ghana’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The engagement took place during a courtesy visit by an MTN Ghana delegation, led by Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer Adwoa Wiafe, to the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, in Accra.

The meeting explored opportunities to promote entrepreneurship, support small businesses, and drive economic growth through private sector collaboration. Discussions focused on how MTN Ghana’s expertise and corporate social investment initiatives could complement government efforts to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of MSMEs.

Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare welcomed the engagement, emphasizing that partnerships with the private sector are vital to advancing Ghana’s industrialisation and enterprise development agenda. She noted that the Ministry would identify priority areas for collaboration and work with the Ghana Enterprises Agency to expand skills development, start-up support, and seed funding opportunities, expressing confidence that the partnership would foster innovation and accelerate private sector-led economic growth.

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has called for stronger safeguards across Ghana’s telecommunications networks to combat rising mobile money fraud. Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, Acting Director of Communications, International Cooperation and Strategic Partnership, Benjamin Maduro Avornyotse, said the Authority is working with telecom operators, including MTN Ghana, and other stakeholders to identify security gaps and strengthen protections against fraudulent activities.

According to Mr. Avornyotse, discussions have focused on introducing additional security measures that could temporarily halt suspicious transactions, allowing investigations before funds are withdrawn. He also stressed the need to strengthen SIM registration by ensuring mobile numbers are accurately linked to verified identities, including Ghana Card details, to improve investigations and hold fraudsters accountable.

The CSA emphasized that mobile money fraud affects all telecom networks and that tackling the issue requires continued collaboration among telecom operators, regulators, law enforcement agencies, and the Authority. Mr. Avornyotse urged customers to protect their mobile money PINs, remain alert to scams, and report suspicious transactions immediately to improve the chances of recovering stolen funds and bringing offenders to justice.

Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building an inclusive digital ecosystem during a meeting with Niloy Banerjee and a delegation from United Nations Development Programme. The minister said the government is using UNESCO‘s Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) to guide the implementation of key digital initiatives by identifying priority areas and assessing project readiness.

The discussions also covered plans to establish a national fintech fund linked to Ghana’s proposed Innovation and Startup legislation. According to the minister, the framework will define eligibility criteria for startups and innovators while providing a legal foundation to ensure the fund’s sustainability and attract greater private sector investment. Both parties also explored expanding collaboration on digital transformation projects, artificial intelligence adoption in public services, and broader support for Ghana’s digital ecosystem.

The UNDP highlighted progress on several flagship initiatives, including an Italian-supported digital transformation project, an MSME digital platform, and a Japanese-backed AI programme aimed at improving public service delivery. The meeting also discussed a capacity-building programme on AI and digital governance for Ghana’s Civil Service, with a focus on gender inclusion, as well as digital infrastructure projects such as the proposed Digital Youth Village to strengthen innovation and accelerate the country’s digital economy.

Ericsson is expanding its AI-native network infrastructure across the United States to support cloud RAN, private 5G, and automated telecom networks. Major operators are accelerating AI adoption, with T-Mobile trialling an AI-native network scheduler, AT&T deploying AI software on its Cloud RAN architecture, and Verizon Business expanding private 5G services for enterprise customers. Ericsson says these investments will strengthen next-generation connectivity and support future industrial growth.

The company’s 5G Smart Factory in Lewisville, Texas, manufactures massive MIMO antennas and RAN hardware for US telecom operators. Since opening in 2020, the facility has grown its workforce to more than 550 employees and increased production eightfold through automation. Ericsson is also advancing programmable networks and AI-driven innovation at its D15 Innovation Hub in Santa Clara, California, while Vonage and Ericsson Enterprise Wireless Solutions continue supporting enterprise private 5G deployments through open APIs.

Ericsson employs more than 6,200 people across over 30 US locations and recently achieved the world’s first pre-standard 6G over-the-air session from its headquarters in Plano, Texas. The company also completed a successful trial of Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISC) technology, using existing massive MIMO radio equipment to detect and track drones. Börje Ekholm said the US remains Ericsson’s most important innovation hub, with AI and advanced connectivity expected to play a central role in the future of telecommunications.

MTN Ghana has awarded GHS150,000 in grants to five outstanding small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) during its World MSME Day Business Pitch Competition, held under the MTN Business SME Accelerate Programme. Ten businesses pitched their ideas, with Tahir Field Recycling, Edible Treats, Dyluri Beauty, Manehlla Foods, and Tropical Snacks emerging as the top finalists. Each received GHS30,000 in grant funding, along with MTN business solutions and digital support packages to help scale their operations.

Although Tahir Field Recycling and Edible Treats achieved the highest scores, MTN awarded all five winners equal grant amounts to extend support to a broader range of businesses. The remaining finalists—10-10 Foodie, Awhenepa Cookery, House of Lush, Bubune Africa Limited, and Lebenam Skin—received GHS2,000 each, as well as digital tools and business solutions, including Y’ello Biz Routers, MiFi devices, Business Eye solutions, and other products to support their digital transformation.

Speaking at the event, Mohamed Abubakar Siddiq said the initiative reflects MTN’s commitment to empowering SMEs with funding, digital tools, and business education to drive growth and job creation. He added that the five winners will also participate in MTN’s 13-week Mini MBA Programme, delivered in partnership with Nova Business School, while Tahir Field Recycling founder Tahir Pumar described the grant as a major boost that will help expand production and create more employment opportunities.

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued a public alert over a sharp increase in fraudulent online investment schemes operating under various aliases.

According to the Authority, a total of 352 cases were recorded in the first half of 2026 alone, with financial losses amounting to GH¢3,429,447.

The scammers primarily use social media platforms to advertise their schemes and rely on mobile money for transactions. 

To appear credible, they often present themselves as subsidiaries of established foreign companies, with Darazz, a legitimate e-commerce company headquartered in Pakistan, being among the brands falsely associated. Other known aliases include Daily Trade, Ghostore, KUKA, and Edollar.

According to the CSA, victims are lured with promises of high returns on investments, often tied to crypto-mining equipment leases or online business tasks. However, once funds are transferred, victims neither receive any returns nor recover their initial investment. The threat actors frequently rebrand to evade detection.

The Authority has advised the public to exercise caution with platforms promising unusually high returns, refrain from engaging with unsolicited messages or WhatsApp groups claiming affiliation with reputable organisations, and verify the legitimacy of investment opportunities through official channels.

The MTN Ghana Foundation has donated GH¢20,000, GH¢1,000 worth of airtime, assorted drinks, and hampers to the Akyem Tafo Traditional Council in support of the 2026 Ohum Kan Festival. The donation forms part of the Foundation’s annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at promoting culture and community development.

Speaking at the presentation, Ransford Gyan, MTN’s Area Sales Manager for the Eastern, Oti, and Volta Regions, said the company is proud to support a festival that preserves cultural heritage while creating economic opportunities for local businesses. He added that the celebration aligns with MTN Ghana’s commitment to connecting people and driving national development, especially as the company marks 30 years of operations in Ghana under the theme, “30 Years of Progress, Powered by You.”

Helios Towers has continued executing its share buyback programme, repurchasing 599,815 ordinary shares between 29 June and 3 July 2026 through Jefferies at volume‑weighted average prices around 198–212 pence. The company intends to cancel all of these shares, rather than hold them in treasury, as part of a capital management strategy announced in November 2025.

Following the cancellation, Helios Towers’ share capital will be reduced to 1,041,607,001 ordinary shares in issue, a new reference figure for regulatory disclosure thresholds under the UK’s transparency rules. The buyback and reduced share count may enhance earnings per share and signal management’s confidence in the business, with implications for existing shareholders’ relative ownership and future market liquidity.
