MTN records 35.5% growth in profit to GH¢3.76bn in quarter 3, 2024

mtn-scaled-1

MTN Ghana continued its sterling performance in 2024 as it recorded a 35.5% year-on-year growth in profit to GH¢3.76 billion in the third quarter of 2024.

This is coming notwithstanding the prevailing macroeconomic challenges.

It highlights the company’s resilience and ability to provide customers with essential connectivity and fintech solutions as the rationale behind this impressive performance.

Additionally, the company sustained its contribution to the nation’s socioeconomic and fiscal development through the MTN Foundation and tax payments.

In the third quarter of 2024, MTN Ghana recorded a 32% year-on-year growth in service revenue.

This growth was driven by increased revenues from data, Mobile Money (MoMo) and digital services and supported by investments that enhanced 4G connectivity.

Additionally, the subscriber base expanded by 10.8% year-on-year.

“We invested GH¢3.7 billion in total capital expenditure during the period to maintain network quality, expand coverage and capacity and enhance our IT systems. These investments improved our service delivery to our customer base of 28.6 million, which includes an additional 0.3 million customers connected in the third quarter”, it disclosed in a statement.

Voice Revenue

Voice revenue decreased by 3.4% year-on-year to GH¢2.6 billion as customers continued to opt for lower-priced plans and switch from traditional calls to voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) due to increased data adoption.

The decrease was mitigated by growth in usage (+11.2% year-on-year in minutes of use) supported by its customer value management initiatives. These customer-centric initiatives also helped to improve the customer experience and reduce churn.

The contribution of voice to total service revenue decreased from 28.1% to 20.6% year-on-year in favour of faster-growing products and services.

Data Revenue

Data revenue recorded a 53.4% year-on-year growth to GH¢6.3 billion.

This was due to improvements in the network and connectivity, which supported a 17.3% year-on-year increase in active data subscribers and a 10.4% year-on-year rise in megabytes consumed per active user per month, consequently resulting in a 29.5% year-on-year growth in data traffic over the period.

The contribution of data revenue to total service revenue increased from 42.8% to 49.8% year-on-year.

Mobile Money

Mobile Money revenue increased by 50.8% year-on-year to GH¢3.1 billion.

This was supported by growth of 79% year-on-year in advanced services revenue and a 41.8% year-on-year growth in basic revenue comprising of cash out and Peer-2-Peer revenue.

The growth in revenue was underpinned by an 18.1% year-on-year increase in active users partly due to improvements in its acquisition channels and the introduction of self-activation which accounts for almost 6,000 additions per week.

The overall contribution of MoMo revenue to total service revenue increased from 21.3% to 24.4% year-on-year.

Digital Revenue

Digital revenue continued to grow strongly, increasing by 65.6% year-on-year to GH¢160 million.

This growth was driven by a 21.5% year-on-year increase in active subscribers as well as usage of products and services, leading to higher revenue from video, gaming and ring-back tones.

The increase in users is attributed to our improved customer experience and our continued focus on providing relevant digital services both locally and internationally.

MTN Foundation delivers crucial technology tools to Eastern Regional Hospital

MTN Ghana

In a move towards enhancing healthcare services in Ghana, the MTN Ghana Foundation has donated 10 laptop computers and two modern interactive boards to the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua. This contribution is both timely and significant, as it will elevate the standards of healthcare delivery and improve the learning experience for medical specialists at the referral facility.

At the donation ceremony, Mrs. Mary Amponsah-Kwatiah, Administrator of the Eastern Regional Hospital, expressed her profound gratitude for the gesture and highlighted the deep impact the new equipment would have on patient care and specialist training.

“For over five years, we have successfully transitioned to electronic folders, replacing traditional paper records with a more efficient digital system,” she explained.

She further noted that every staff member, whether nurse or doctor, is now required to use a computer or laptop in their daily tasks. The addition of 10 laptops would not only be beneficial to the workers but would also significantly enhance their capabilities.

“These items will go a long way in improving the quality of healthcare service we provide to our clients,” she added.

The hospital had long transitioned from paper folders to an electronic records system, integrating technology into its workflows. While the donation of the laptops will augment the existing supplies, it still falls short of the hospital’s overall demand for approximately 200 computers or laptops. Nevertheless, the new laptops will provide essential tools for many healthcare workers—from nurses to doctors—enhancing their efficiency and supporting their daily medical practices.

The donation comes at a crucial time, as the hospital was granted accreditation in January 2024 from the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons to train fellows in general surgery, family medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology.

“This donation is instrumental to our specialists and trainees, as they utilize technology for consultations and surgeries, ensuring every vital aspect of patient care is documented electronically,” Mrs. Amponsah-Kwatiah told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of the ceremony.

She also took the GNA through the hospital, including the mortuary department, to demonstrate how automation initiatives were enhancing healthcare service delivery. She emphasized that all staff members had upgraded their skills to keep pace with evolving technologies. Notably, some mortuary attendants hold master’s degrees, reflecting the hospital’s commitment to professionalism and excellence.

With the introduction of the new interactive boards, doctors can now conduct consultations remotely, effectively eliminating the need for patients to travel long distances to the regional hospital. Additionally, the automation of hospital records has significantly reduced unnecessary delays and improved overall productivity.

Mrs. Amponsah-Kwatiah noted that the transition not only streamlined processes but also discouraged corrupt practices such as bribery, fostering a more transparent and efficient healthcare environment.

She stressed that the groundbreaking supplies would allow specialists at the hospital to interact with patients virtually, providing timely and efficient healthcare solutions. “Our doctors can see patients from afar, making it a modern approach to healthcare,” she said.

Speaking to journalists, Mr. Robert Kuzoe, Senior Manager of the MTN Ghana Foundation, elaborated on the purpose of the donation, stating, “We are dedicated to enhancing teaching and learning within healthcare institutions. This donation reflects our commitment to support the Eastern Regional Hospital as it elevates its role in the medical field.”

He emphasized that the technology tools would enable physicians in training to receive real-time education and feedback, significantly reducing the need for travel to the national capital, Accra, for lectures and supervision.

“With a click of these devices, they can connect with their lecturers, supervisors, and colleagues from any location in Ghana, thus cutting down on travel costs and saving precious time,” he added.

Mr. Kuzoe reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s commitment to ensuring that everyone benefits from modern connectivity, saying, “Our aim is to contribute to society by providing advanced digital equipment to health institutions, helping to enhance the overall quality of healthcare.”

The Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua is not the first beneficiary of such a transformative gift from the MTN Ghana Foundation. The foundation has previously supported several educational and health institutions, including the University of Ghana Medical Centre, Tema General Hospital, and Keta Municipal Hospital. It also provided a GH₵2.2 million 100-seater robotics center at Mamfe Methodist Girls’ SHS and a GH₵5.47 million ultra-modern Accident and Emergency Block to Bawjiase Polyclinic.

Through its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, established in 2007, MTN Ghana Foundation focuses on health, education, and economic empowerment, constantly seeking ways to strengthen communities and promote development.

As the Eastern Regional Hospital embraces this new chapter of innovation and technology, both patients and medical practitioners can look forward to a more efficient and accessible healthcare delivery system.

Ghana joins league of countries using 5G network – to drive growth, development

Ghana has become one of the nations that has adopted 5G technology to enhance digital transformation and stimulate economic development.

The 5G infrastructure was established by Next-Gen InfraCo, a consortium of telecommunications service providers that has been granted exclusive rights for a decade to implement both 5G and 4G networks throughout the country, aiming to improve network coverage and reliability in Ghana.

The President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, speaking at the launch in Accra on Friday said, “We are at a crossroads where digital technology is no longer an option, but an imperative. Our digital transformation agenda aimed at creating an inclusive digital ecosystem is critical for job creation, economic diversification, and global competitiveness.”

He said the launch of the 5G launch positioned Ghana to embrace a future that was connected, agile, and responsive.

The 5G technology, he noted, would have a transformative impact on the country’s national landscape, adding that, “Its high speed, minimal latency, and enhanced capacity would drive our agenda forward.”

In the areas of health, education, agriculture, and security, the President stated that the 5G would enable innovations that enhance service accessibility and affordability.

“We can envisage healthcare consultations conducted remotely, real-time crop monitoring, and access to educational content in even the remotest regions,” he stressed.

President Nana Akufo-Addo further indicated that, “This is not a distant dream, but an imminent reality if we act with foresight and commitment. 5G will be a catalyst for industrial growth, empowering domestic businesses, particularly micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, MSMEs, which are the backbone of our economy. With faster, more reliable internet, MSMEs can reach new markets, streamline logistics, and scale up their operations.”

The Managing Director of NextGen Infraco, Tenu Awoonor, said as the government aimed to transform the nation’s digital environment, NextGen Infraco would guarantee that the substantial investment in this global shift yields financial and economic benefits for the country.

“With the advent of 5G, we have the opportunity to foster a more inclusive society, ensuring that no individual in Ghana is overlooked. Whether you are a farmer in Tamale, a small business proprietor in Kumasi, or a student in Cape Coast, 5G will connect you to the global community and unlock new avenues for advancement,” he said.

“At NextGen Infraco, we take immense pride in contributing to this evolution. We are not merely observers; we are actively investing in Ghana’s future. We view 5G not just as a means of innovation, but as a driving force for growth, development, and the empowerment of every Ghanaian,” he added.

The Minister for Communication and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, underlined that the introduction of 5G had the potential to foster innovations across various sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, banking, and more.

“Today, we commemorate not only a technological transformation but also a reflection of our resilience, innovation, and collective advancement as a nation.”

She highlighted the significant progress made in the telecommunications sector, noting the country’s evolution from 1G to the forefront of 5G technology,” she explained.
