Ericsson Report: 5G Growth Accelerates as AI Drives Network Traffic

Global 5G subscriptions reached 2.94 billion by the end of 2025, representing about one-third of all mobile subscriptions worldwide, according to Ericsson’s June 2026 Mobility Report. The figure is projected to rise to 6.4 billion by 2031, with 5G expected to overtake 4G as the world’s leading mobile technology by 2027.

Ericsson said the rapid growth of AI-powered smartphones, smart glasses and connected cameras is reshaping network traffic, particularly by increasing demand for uplink capacity. Global mobile data traffic grew 22% between Q1 2025 and Q1 2026 to 210 exabytes per month and is expected to reach 328 exabytes by 2031, excluding fixed wireless access (FWA).

The report also highlights growing commercial use of 5G standalone network slicing, enabling operators to offer differentiated connectivity for applications such as gaming, live events and business services. Meanwhile, FWA connections are projected to increase from 185 million in 2025 to 350 million by 2031, with about 85% running on 5G.

Looking ahead, Ericsson expects early 6G commercial services around 2030, with the technology designed to support AI workloads, advanced sensing, satellite integration and emerging applications such as autonomous vehicles and digital twins.
