MTN to build 80 new sites across the five regions of the north as part of a $1.1bn investment

MTN Ghana will construct 80 new network sites across the five northern regions in 2026 as part of a $1.1 billion investment plan to expand coverage and improve service quality nationwide.

The company has earmarked $380 million for network expansion this year, with the northern rollout comprising 38 sites in the Northern Region, 17 in Savannah, 14 in Upper East, 11 in North East and one in Upper West. Nationwide, MTN plans to deploy 500 new sites.

Senior Manager for Base Station Subsystems, Emmanuel Kwei Afutu, said the expansion will improve connectivity for farmers, students, businesses and communities, while supporting digital payments, online learning and security communications.

The investment comes amid rising demand for digital services, with MTN Ghana reporting a 44.4% year-on-year increase in mobile money transaction value in the first half of 2026. The company also recorded a 32.3% rise in revenue to GH¢15 billion and a 46.8% increase in profit after tax to GH¢5.1 billion during the period.

Beyond network infrastructure, MTN is investing in digital skills, education and community development through initiatives including the MTN Skills Academy and Bright Scholarship. Afutu said affordability and digital literacy remain challenges and called for continued collaboration with government, regulators and communities.
