Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George says Ghana is accelerating investment in telecommunications infrastructure to expand network coverage and improve the quality of digital services across the country.
Speaking during a tour of the Eastern Region, Mr George highlighted the need for additional cell sites to ensure that Ghanaians fully benefit from the government’s efforts to make data more affordable.
He said mobile network operators are already rolling out about 1,100 new sites nationwide, with MTN Ghana accounting for roughly 800 and Telecel about 350. Around 180 of MTN’s sites have already been completed, with government targeting nearly 400 by the end of 2026 and full completion by the first or second quarter of 2027.
The Minister said the expansion will help improve coverage, increase network capacity and enhance the customer experience, particularly in fast-growing communities where demand for connectivity is rising.
The government is also advancing other initiatives, including a 5G spectrum auction and the upgrade of all Rural Telephony Project sites to a minimum of 4G, strengthening connectivity in underserved communities.
Mr George encouraged communities to support the deployment of telecommunications infrastructure, stressing that new sites are essential to keeping pace with Ghana’s growing digital economy.
He also assured the public that telecommunications infrastructure is subject to regulatory and safety oversight by the National Communications Authority (NCA) and other relevant institutions.
The Minister said the continued expansion and modernisation of Ghana’s telecom infrastructure will help create a more connected, reliable and digitally enabled Ghana, while ensuring that the benefits of affordable data reach more communities across the country.
