The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has engaged Huawei on technology solutions aimed at addressing connectivity challenges and expanding digital access in underserved rural communities.
The engagement, shared by Joshua William Kamanga, Fixed Network Solutions and Product Manager at Huawei, focused on solutions designed to make connectivity more affordable, scalable and accessible across Malawi.
Among the solutions presented was Huawei’s Rural Link, a compact telecommunications site that integrates solar power, radio equipment, microwave and baseband technology into a pole-based structure.
Huawei said the solution could help reduce deployment costs in smaller communities where conventional network infrastructure may not be commercially viable.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of affordable smartphones in advancing digital inclusion, with Huawei noting that expanded network coverage would have limited impact if consumers could not afford devices to access internet services.
Huawei said it remained committed to working with the Malawian government, regulators, operators and other stakeholders to support digital transformation and extend connectivity to more communities.
The engagement comes as Malawi continues efforts to bridge the digital divide, particularly in rural and underserved areas where the cost of traditional telecommunications infrastructure can limit network expansion.
