Telecom equipment maker Ericsson has been selected by Japan’s NTT Docomo to supply its next-generation RAN Compute platform for the operator’s mobile network, including 5G. The company said in a press release.
The AI-ready and programmable platform is based on Ericsson’s latest in-house semiconductors and is optimized for 4G, 5G and 5G Advanced. The rollout began in July.
According to Ericsson, the new platform can deliver up to twice the capacity while using less than half the energy compared with the previous generation of baseband products.
The companies will also work together on developing next-generation network architecture to address an expected increase in AI-generated data traffic.
