MTN Ghana has pledged a GH¢20 million support package for Ghanaians returning from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks, with the funds aimed at helping them rebuild their lives.
MTN Ghana Board Chairman Dr Ishmael Yamson said the company initially set aside GH¢10 million to provide immediate assistance to returnees. The company later doubled the commitment to GH¢20 million after deciding that longer-term support would have a greater impact.
According to Dr Yamson, the fund will help returnees restart their lives after returning to Ghana with limited belongings and resources. He said MTN Ghana is working to ensure the intervention provides meaningful and lasting support rather than short-term relief.
He acknowledged that the company should have engaged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier and admitted that internal processes contributed to delays. However, he stressed that MTN Ghana remains committed to implementing the programme.
Dr Yamson also condemned the xenophobic attacks and said MTN Ghana had been concerned about the welfare of affected Ghanaians, while commending organisations that had already provided support to returnees.
