Ghana’s Communications Minister, Samuel Nartey George, has assured the public that telecommunications cell sites are safe, as government continues to expand connectivity across underserved communities.
During a September 4 tour of digital infrastructure projects in the Eastern Region, the Minister visited Rural Telephony Project sites in Dumpong, Obosono and Nsakye, as well as Community Information Centres and a new cell site being constructed in Koforidua under the government’s 800-site expansion programme with MTN.
George also addressed public concerns about the health and safety of telecommunications masts, stressing that similar network infrastructure is used within government facilities, including the Ministry of Communication and the National Communications Authority.
The tour also highlighted the government’s digital skills agenda. At the Koforidua Regional Information Centre, the Minister observed training under the One Million Coders Programme, which uses existing Community Information Centres as hubs for coding and digital skills development.
The bigger picture: Government is pursuing connectivity expansion alongside digital skills development, with feedback from communities expected to guide further collaboration with telecom operators to improve network coverage across the Eastern Region.
