Huawei and Ethio Telecom have expanded their long-standing partnership to accelerate Ethiopia’s digital transformation, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoT) and enterprise digital solutions. The agreement supports Ethio Telecom’s “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028” strategy, which aims to transform the state-owned operator into a technology-driven digital services provider for businesses and SMEs.
The partnership will strengthen digital services across sectors including finance, manufacturing, agriculture and public services, while enhancing telebirr, Ethio Telecom’s mobile financial platform, with digital payments, e-commerce and business management tools for small businesses. Huawei will also support local software development, engineering capacity building, smartphone affordability initiatives and digital literacy programmes to expand digital inclusion and innovation.
Huawei reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ethio Telecom’s growth into a regional technology player, building on the operator’s recent digital partnerships across East Africa. The collaboration reflects a broader trend in Africa’s telecom sector, where operators are evolving beyond connectivity to deliver AI, cloud, fintech and enterprise technologies that support economic growth and digital transformation.
