CSquared Group has added capacity on the 2Africa West submarine cable system to strengthen international connectivity and improve internet resilience across West and Central Africa. The move expands the company’s existing connectivity infrastructure by combining multiple subsea routes with its terrestrial fibre backbone, giving mobile network operators, internet service providers and enterprise customers greater route diversity and reducing reliance on a single international cable or landing point.
The investment comes as the region continues to face disruptions caused by subsea cable cuts, highlighting the risks of relying on a limited number of coastal cable landing stations. CSquared’s terrestrial backbone connects international cable landing points to inland markets across Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, while the integration of 2Africa West provides an additional international route. This multi-route architecture is expected to reduce exposure to single points of failure, improve network availability and support faster restoration when disruptions occur.
According to CSquared, the 2Africa West capacity is already commercially available on selected priority routes, with further availability to be released in phases based on route readiness and customer demand. The company said the additional capacity will help customers build more resilient networks capable of supporting critical digital services, cloud platforms and mobile networks. CSquared Group CEO Ian Paterson emphasised that diverse international routes are increasingly important as digital demand grows across West Africa, while CTO Samuel Owusu Yeboah noted that resilient connectivity is essential for uninterrupted digital service delivery.
