The government will introduce a new biometric SIM registration exercise to strengthen the security and integrity of Ghana’s telecommunications sector, according to the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George. The new Electronic Communications Numbering Resource Registration system will address shortcomings identified in the previous SIM registration process by introducing real-time biometric verification through the National Identification Authority (NIA) to combat SIM swap fraud, mobile money fraud, identity theft and the use of unregistered SIM cards.
The Minister said the exercise will be supported by stronger cybersecurity measures and a revised legal framework to enhance consumer protection and improve the reliability of the National SIM Register. To make registration more accessible, subscribers will be able to register remotely using compatible smartphones, while additional registration centres, appointment systems and mobile registration teams will be deployed to serve people in underserved communities.
