The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, in partnership with the Ghana Police Service and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has engaged traders at the Mankessim market on mobile money fraud, telecommunications safety and network quality.
The engagement formed part of efforts to educate traders on fraud prevention and address concerns about unreliable mobile network services in parts of the Central Region.
He urged traders to verify transactions and avoid sharing sensitive information such as PINs and one-time passwords.
Speaking during the exercise, Mankessim Divisional Crime Officer, ASP Hayford Alave, disclosed that three people had been arrested in connection with MoMo fraud following intelligence-led operations targeting fraud hotspots, particularly busy market areas.
The Chamber’s CEO, Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah, also addressed concerns about poor network connectivity, explaining that fibre optic cable damage caused by road construction and illegal mining activities was contributing to service disruptions.
She cited damage along the Winneba–Mankessim road as one of the causes of network outages and appealed to residents and traders to exercise patience while damaged infrastructure is repaired.
The engagement also provided an opportunity for the Chamber to dispel concerns that telecommunications towers cause cancer, stressing that there is no scientific basis for the claim.
