South Sudan is seeking Huawei’s support to accelerate the digitalisation of public services and strengthen the country’s ICT infrastructure.
Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services Minister Ateny Wek Ateny held discussions with Huawei Vice-President for Global Public Business Eric Ma in Hangzhou, China, exploring potential collaboration in e-governance, smart cities, energy solutions and the development of a national data hub in Juba.
The engagement signals renewed relations between South Sudan and Huawei following tensions that began in 2014, when government officials accused the company of hacking government emails and forging documents. Despite the fallout, Huawei continued supporting digital initiatives in the country, including connecting schools to the internet and refurbishing laboratories.
Relations improved after Ateny and Huawei South Sudan CEO Wang Shibo took office in 2025. Their discussions in Juba in early 2026 focused on bridging the digital divide, establishing a national data hub and transforming Juba into a smart city.
The latest engagement further highlights South Sudan’s efforts to leverage technology partnerships to expand digital public services and modernise its infrastructure.
