NCA Steps Up Public Education on Telecom Masts in Eastern Region

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has intensified public education in the Eastern Region to address concerns about the construction and safety of telecommunications masts and towers.

The campaign followed public concerns over a telecommunications mast at the Koforidua-Kumasi Lorry Station. NCA officials engaged traders, transport operators and commuters at the Koforidua Central Market and also extended the exercise to Adawso.

The Authority used one-on-one engagements, information centres and radio sensitisation programmes to educate the public on the role of telecommunications infrastructure and address concerns surrounding radio frequency exposure.

Participants were informed that telecom masts operate within internationally accepted safety limits and are deployed under regulatory, technical, structural, environmental and safety requirements.

The NCA said telecommunications infrastructure remains critical to reliable voice and data services, emergency communications, broadcasting, digital financial services and broader socio-economic development.

The Authority encouraged the public to seek information from credible sources and said it would continue its consumer education and stakeholder engagement efforts to promote greater understanding and confidence in communications technologies.

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month launched; CSA calls for stronger collaboration against cybercrime

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has called for stronger collaboration among financial institutions, telecommunications companies, fintechs, government agencies and the public to combat rising cybercrime and protect Ghana’s expanding digital finance ecosystem.

The Director-General of the CSA, Mr Devine Selase Agbeti, made the call at the media launch of the 2026 National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, scheduled for October 1 to 31, under the theme: “Securing Ghana’s Digital Finance Ecosystem: Building Trust through Collaboration and Cyber Resilience.”

Mr Agbeti said government alone could not win the fight against cybercrime, stressing that a coordinated approach among stakeholders was essential to safeguarding Ghana’s digital economy.

Figures from the CSA show that 3,876 cybersecurity incidents were reported between January and July 2026, with online fraud accounting for 1,818 cases, representing about 47 per cent of all reported incidents.

He also cited the Bank of Ghana’s 2025 fraud report, which recorded an increase in reported fraud cases across banks, specialised deposit-taking institutions and payment service providers from 16,733 in 2024 to 24,778 in 2025, representing a 48 per cent increase.

According to Mr Agbeti, the growing reliance on digital payments, electronic salary payments, mobile money and online commerce has expanded opportunities for economic activity but also increased the avenues available to cybercriminals.

“Every expansion in digital access also expands the surface area that criminals seek to exploit.”

He said the awareness campaign would focus on helping citizens and institutions identify and prevent cyber-enabled financial crimes, including online investment scams, romance scams, business email compromise, identity theft, impersonation and social engineering.

The Deputy Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mr Mohammed Adam Sukparu, described cybersecurity as a shared national responsibility and urged stakeholders to strengthen collaboration in building a safer digital environment.

The month-long campaign will feature public education and stakeholder engagements aimed at promoting safer digital financial practices and strengthening cyber resilience across Ghana.

MTN Ghana, UG Partner to Build Ghana’s Next Generation of AI Innovators

MTN-logo-1068x808-1

MTN Ghana and the University of Ghana (UG) have signed an MoU to strengthen collaboration in artificial intelligence, digital innovation and talent development.

The partnership will support the MTN Digital Excellence Award and MTN DigiTech AI Hackathon 2026, giving students opportunities to develop practical AI solutions to local challenges through mentorship, incubation, industry exposure and potential real-world deployment.

MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett said Ghana must leverage its growing pool of talent to develop homegrown AI solutions across sectors including agriculture and infrastructure, rather than relying solely on technologies developed elsewhere.

MTN Ghana Chief Digital Officer Ibrahim Misto challenged young Ghanaians to move beyond being consumers of technology and become developers and innovators solving local problems. Through UG’s Human-Computer Interaction Lab, promising ideas will be developed into functional prototypes and potentially scaled for wider use.

UG Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo stressed the need for stronger industry-academia partnerships to prepare students for an AI-driven future. She also highlighted the importance of inclusive technology, including projects such as Tɛkyerɛma Pa, an AI speech-recognition initiative focused on Ghanaian languages and accessibility for people with speech impairments.

The partnership is expected to strengthen industry-relevant skills, AI research, innovation and digital competitiveness, while creating pathways for students to turn academic knowledge into solutions with real social and economic impact.

Cybersecurity Is a Duty Owed to Every Customer – CSA Boss

Cyber Security Authority (CSA) Director-General Divine Selase Agbeti has called on financial institutions to treat cybersecurity as a responsibility to customers, rather than simply a regulatory requirement.

Speaking at the launch of the 2026 National Cyber Security Awareness Month, he cited a 48% increase in reported fraud cases, from 16,733 in 2024 to 24,778 in 2025. The CSA also recorded 3,876 cybersecurity incidents between January and July 2026, with online fraud accounting for about 47%.

Agbeti urged banks, fintechs, payment service providers, insurers and merchants to engage only CSA-licensed or accredited cybersecurity providers, warning that institutions that disregard cybersecurity obligations could face regulatory action.

The month-long campaign, running from October 1–31, 2026, will focus on securing Ghana’s digital finance ecosystem, preventing cybercrime, strengthening cyber resilience, promoting cyber hygiene, and building capacity through collaboration.

Meanwhile, CID Director-General COP Lydia Yaako Donkor highlighted recent law-enforcement operations that resulted in 107 arrests, the seizure of 835 devices and the identification of 108 victims.

The Ghana Association of Banks also stressed the importance of trust, intelligence-sharing and collaboration in tackling financial fraud and strengthening Ghana’s digital economy.

South Sudan Seeks Huawei Support for Digitalisation

South Sudan is seeking Huawei’s support to accelerate the digitalisation of public services and strengthen the country’s ICT infrastructure.

Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services Minister Ateny Wek Ateny held discussions with Huawei Vice-President for Global Public Business Eric Ma in Hangzhou, China, exploring potential collaboration in e-governance, smart cities, energy solutions and the development of a national data hub in Juba.

The engagement signals renewed relations between South Sudan and Huawei following tensions that began in 2014, when government officials accused the company of hacking government emails and forging documents. Despite the fallout, Huawei continued supporting digital initiatives in the country, including connecting schools to the internet and refurbishing laboratories.

Relations improved after Ateny and Huawei South Sudan CEO Wang Shibo took office in 2025. Their discussions in Juba in early 2026 focused on bridging the digital divide, establishing a national data hub and transforming Juba into a smart city.

The latest engagement further highlights South Sudan’s efforts to leverage technology partnerships to expand digital public services and modernise its infrastructure.
