MTN Ghana is set to deploy newly awarded 5G spectrum worth US$202 million alongside its existing spectrum holdings, as the telecom operator moves to expand network capacity and improve service quality across the country.
The additional spectrum is expected to support growing demand for high-speed connectivity while accelerating the expansion of 5G mobile services and home connectivity.
The development follows notification from the National Communications Authority (NCA) that MTN Ghana has been awarded spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands for 5G and mobile broadband services.
The licences will run for 15 years, with MTN Ghana receiving two 20 MHz lots in the 700 MHz band and 150 MHz in the 3 GHz band.
MTN Ghana is expected to pay a total of US$202 million for the spectrum, comprising US$100.9 million for the 700 MHz allocation and US$101.1 million for the 3 GHz allocation.
The company said it is finalising the formalities and payment obligations associated with the licence acquisition, adding that the spectrum payments have already been incorporated into its equity free cash flow outlook.
MTN Ghana said the new spectrum will complement its existing spectrum stock and provide additional capacity as demand for data and high-speed connectivity continues to increase.
The operator expects the investment to strengthen network performance, improve service quality and enhance the customer experience across the country.
“Following the issuance of the spectrum licences, the Company will deploy the 5G spectrum in addition to its existing spectrum stock, to strengthen network capacity, enhance service quality, and improve customer experience across Ghana,” the company said in a statement.
Supporting 5G and home connectivity
MTN Ghana said the additional spectrum will also be critical to accelerating the growth of 5G mobility and advancing its plans for home connectivity.
The expanded capacity could enable the operator to support more high-speed connections and accommodate rising data traffic from households and businesses.
The investment therefore represents a significant expansion of MTN Ghana’s spectrum resources, while strengthening its capacity to scale 5G services as demand for faster and more reliable connectivity grows.
MTN Ghana said it will continue to update the market on material developments as it completes the licensing process and progresses with the deployment of the newly awarded spectrum and high-speed 5G services.
